Early Event of Sexual Induction in Volvox: Chemical Modification of the Extracellular Matrix
نویسنده
چکیده
The sexual pheromone of Volvox carter-i elicits drastic changes in the synthesis of extracellular sulfated glycoproteins. Synthesis of at least two sulfated glycoproteins is turned on. Induction of this synthetic capacity is as sensitive to the pheromone (-10-i6M) as the overall process of sexual induction. The earliest response, detectable a few minutes after the application of the pheromone, is the synthesis of a tyrosine sulfate-containing glycoprotein (SG 70). SG 70 is a short-lived molecule (half-life 20 min) and serves as a precursor for an insoluble extracellular matrix structure. The pheromone-induced sulfated glycoproteins described are exclusively synthesized by somatic cells, rather than by reproductive cells, the ultimate recipients of the pheromone’s message. Contrary to earlier reports in the literature, it is demonstrated that isolated reproductive cells remain responsive to the sexual pheromone and develop to sexual spheroids. In the light of this finding together with the site of their synthesis the role of these pheromone-induced glycoproteins is discussed.

The alga Volvox carteri is one of the simplest multicellular organisms, yet it has a surprisingly complex extracellular matrix (ECM), making Volvox suitable as a model system in which to study ECM self-assembly. Here, we analyze the primary structures and post-translational modifications of two main ECM components synthesized in response to sexual induction as well as wounding. These proteins a...

Despite a great deal of interest, the evolutionary origins and roles of sex remain unclear. Recently, we showed that in the multicellular green alga, Volvox carteri, sex is a response to increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which could be indicative of the ancestral role of sex as an adaptive response to stress-induced ROS. To provide additional support for the suggestion that sex...
متن کاملThe extracellular matrix of Volvox carteri: molecular structure of the cellular compartment
The extracellular matrix (ECM) of Volvox contains insoluble fibrous layers that surround individual cells at a distance to form contiguous cellular compartments. Using immunological techniques, we identified a sulfated surface glycoprotein (SSG 185) as the monomeric precursor of this substructure within the ECM. The primary structure of the SSG 185 poly-peptide chain has been derived from cDNA ...

The study of the dependence of reactions on the concentration of various compounds is often of great value in determining reaction mechanisms . In chemical kinetics, it is often found that, according to van't Hoff's rule, the order of dependence of a reaction on the concentration of some compound involved in that reaction is equal to the number of molecules of the compound involved in each reac...

The role of heart disease in increasing worldwide death and the limited availability of organs for transplantation have encouraged multiple strategies to fabricate functional and implantable constructs. One of these strategies is to develop a biologically similar heart tissue scaffold, in which two types of fiber and hydrogel are commonly used. Toward this goal, taking advantage of both hydroge...
